Description:
The Feast of the Youth is a well established tradition that takes place each year on the first Sunday after the orthodox Easter, a day called Tomii’s Sunday. The location is the oldest area of Brasov City, Schei (Schkei) district.
The custom is considered an initiation ritual for the young men, for, in Transylvania, the term “june” designates young men not married. Nowadays, the celebration consists in a parade. Early in the morning, the men descend astride in the city, carrying maces and flags, each group having their own special and unique costumes. They stop in front of St. Nicholas Church in the Union Square where they go round the statue of the unknown hero while the parochial priest blesses the flags in a brief mess.
Next, Junii organize themselves in seven different groups, an order due to the belief that God made the world in seven days. The first group is the one of the young Juni, followed by the Elder ones, Curcani, Dorobanti, Brasovecheni, Rosiori and Albiori. The parade is led by a brass band and passes through the old city's streets up to the so called "Intre chetri" (Between the Rocks), where the ritual starts…
The celebration ends at Solomon's Stones, where the final feast takes place and where Junii demonstrate their skill in throwing their mace in the air.
