Cluj Napoca

DURGAU – SALTY VALLEY area
Situates north-west of Turda, the area known as Durgau-Valea Sarata (Salty Valley) stands out though the typical salt-impregnated landscape, characterized though phenomena of intense erosion of the soil, as well as through fairly large, perfectly horizontal areas (about 2 km long and 400-500 m large). As a consequence of the crushing of the salt mines, exploited up to 17th century, some salty lakes were formed. The five lakes were in the area – Durgau, Sulfuros (with sulphur), Ocnei (of the mine), Rotund (round) and Dulce (sweet) have depths between 2 and 37 meters. The salty lakes and the black mud in the area have exceptional healing properties for rheumatic, locomotory and circulatory ailments. Although no special facilities have been arranged here, these healing qualities are highly appreciated by a large number of locals and not oily. At the same time, the presence of certain species of plants and rare insects contributed, like with the salty lakes and the Old Salt Mine, to it being proclaimed, in the year 2000, a natural reservation.

THE SALTY SPAS
The existence of a salt deposit and the exploitation of this reserve over the centuries, created in the North-East of the town, at about 2 km from the centre, a specific landscape. It is the Salty Spas micro-depression.
The exploitation of salt, the process of carstification, of the salt deposit, as well as the land slidings, contributed to the formation of numerous lakes which are in different evolution stages. Some of these lakes, especially the antroposalinic ones lying on the very surface area of a former salt mine, are used by the population to curing purposes or for entertainment.
The concentration of salt differs from one lake to another. The high content of salt and other elements confer to these lakes special therapeutic properties. From this point of view the highest interest is directed to the Roman Lake where the town’s swimming pool has been built; then there is Tarzan Lake, followed by the chain of lakes from Salty Valley, west of the Salty Spas micro-depression, the name of which is Durgau. The water in these lakes contains either chlorosodium, or bicarbonate, or calcium or magnesium and has a high therapeutic value for the muscular and the bone system, or the peripheral nervous system or for the gynecologic ailments.
Another important therapeutic factor of the zone is the medicinal mud. This type of peat mud lies at 0.5 – 1 m depth under the layer of deposit and it is used for cure, spread on the body followed by heliotherapy. The treatment is often applied in unorganized manner or in the balneal complex.

THE BALNEAL COMPLEX
Unlike the other components of the entertainment area called The Salty Spas, which only function during the Season, the balneal complex is open all over the year. The complex contains a hotel and a balneal treatment base. The latter offers a large range of procedures for rheumatic, gynecologic and respiratory ailments such as> galvanic baths, salty baths, sauna, mud and paraffin packagings, massage as well as therapeutic gymnastics. The treatment base has well equipped surgeries as well as highly and medium specialized medical staff.
